Saint Francis Assisi was born Giovanni the son of a wealthy merchant named Pietro di Bernadone.

He was a knight that was taken as a prisoner of war for a year. He changed after that event and when back
home he decided to rebuild a destroyed church by taking some of his father's expensive cloth and selling it.

His father put him in front of the Bishop to have him disinherited from the family money. Francis gladly accepted
this and took off his clothes and gave them to the Bishop who then covered him in his own cloak.

He then went about preaching the virtues of embracing poverty.

Along the way he met Clare who is also a Saint now.

There was a large fire on a mountain one day and he went up into it and returned with Stigmata. He died two
years later.
This is a Tau Cross that Saint Francis adopted for his order.

It does not have to look just like this one but it usually has no top portion above the intersection.

The theory is that the cross Jesus died on would have not had that portion.
So the great part is since there is a male and female component of this team there are two feasts.

Saint Francis in October 4th and Poor Clare is August 11th.
