When I was in the Marine Corps during Desert Shield I had the the chance to meet John Kerry. One
day someone came down to our company and asked if there was anyone from Massachusetts. There
were several of us, to include Captain Ed Dunlap, but only three of us went.

I was assigned to show Senator Kerry around the outside of a tank. He would ask questions, not listen
to the answer and smile at the camera. After that the three of us from Massachusetts were asked for
our names and addresses by his assistant who was an older man.

Oddly all three of us were named Christopher John, something the aid commented on. My family
never got the promised letter, but John Kerry’s ears perked up when I told the aid I was from
Sherborn. Kerry considers Millis, the next town over, to be his childhood home.

At that point I realized I had just ended up on a “list”.

Fast forward to twelve years later. I am a veteran just released from the National Guard in Vermont
living in Court Street, the VA’s answer to helping veterans. I am late for lunch, walk into the kitchen
and it is just me, Mitt Romney and one of his aids.

He is not the Governor yet, but is preparing to win in November. There were no cameras or hangers
on. The aid I am sure is standard proceedure for someone you do not know. He asked a series of
questions, and actually listend to the answers. This is when it occurred to me Romney is a problem
solver, it is an addiction at times.

Many could say he did that so if you were a nut there was no proof. I say that had I been a democrat
or a nut there will be no suprise photos of me and him talking released by his people.

That’s a big difference to me.
